Softkinetic-Optrima Electronics S.A., the leading provider of 3D imaging solutions, 3D CMOS sensors and 3D gesture recognition software, today announced it has adapted its gesture recognition platform to the Intel® Media Processor CE 3100, making the vision of interactive television a reality.

Combining Softkinetic’s gesture-recognition software and Optrima’s imaging hardware, the solution will be available to consumer electronics developers in Q2 2010. The solution will allow application and content developers to build interactive applications for a new generation of interactive television set-top boxes, including new user interfaces, video games, interactive TV applications and more.

“The 3D imaging market is entering into a phase of rapid growth, and 3D imaging solutions will soon be integrated into television sets and set-top boxes, offering consumers an unprecedented level of interactivity with their TV,” said Michel Tombroff, Softkinetic-Optrima managing director and Softkinetic CEO. “Intel Corporation’s vision to bring the power and flexibility of the Intel® architecture to the interactive TV experience is exactly in line with our strategy, and we are very pleased to be able to deliver 3D gesture-based interfaces and applications to the consumer.”

With the massive amount of TV content delivered digitally today and in the future, personalization and interactivity is critical. In addition, delivering interactive entertainment, software programs, and games shall be vital components of the user experience. Softkinetic Optrima will also adapt its solution to the Intel® Atom™ Processor CE4100 in the near future.

“By the year 2015, it’s expected there will be billions of consumer devices delivering billions of hours of video content, music, video games and web browsing, so naturally we’ll need much more sophisticated ways to organize and deliver content in interactive and intuitive ways,” said Mike Tyson, marketing manager at Intel. “As a leader in the field of 3D gesture recognition, Softkinetic-Optrima is helping make interactive TV a reality using the power of the Intel CE media processors.”
